On being average

This is a great improv principle – it’s about doing the obvious, rather than the clever, or exceptional. It’s about doing enough, rather than trying to achieve perfection. It’s about giving yourself permission to do more, rather than agonise over getting that last report just so.

I was reminded of this principle twice today – once when a friend said he was still working on a final report for a big, three-year project, and as I was trying to pull together all of my ideas for a workshop I’m running in Taiwan later this week. ‘Be average’ I said to him; ‘Be average’ I said to myself. Great advice – even if I say so myself!
