Writing
Today’s #reverb10 prompt is: What do you do each day that doesn’t contribute to your writing — and can you eliminate it?
I’m doing it now. Instead of going with my first impulse, I self-censor. I worry too much what others will think. I try to come up with a better idea, discarding ideas with abandon because they’re not enough. What can I do about it? Notice I’m doing it and write anyway.
Yes Viv – that is a big blocker to my writing too, once I stop drinking tea and sit down to write then self-censoring is the next thing! I worked with a young adult last year who self-censored to the max. After an hour of working on a document, he would decide whatever he had written wasn’t correct, good enough or whatever and hold the delete button down until it was all gone. Then start again to repeat the pattern 30 minutes later. How fixed the mind can be! I am writing more this year than ever, I agree that all I need to do about it at this stage is notice my self-censoring and write anyway. Thanks for sharing your answers to #reverb10 online.
